Ikebana #3

Tuberose, New Zealand flax and Dahlia.

A tuberose has a sweet smell and interestingly the smell gets strong at night.  I noticed the nice sweet smell when I entered a room after work, but in the next morning it didn't smell as strong as the last night.  First, I thought my noses were more sensitive in the evening with the light off than the sunny morning.   After looking over tuberose on the Internet, it turned out that a tuberose has a stronger smell at night!

Ikebana #2

It's been a while since I last posted!  I took a photo of flower arrangements I did last month.  Flowers die faster in summer than the other seasons, so I changed water in the vase every day this time instead of adding water to the vase.  I think it worked and the flowers stayed longer.

Ikebana

I've been taking Ikebana (flower arrangement) lessons for almost three years. I arranged callas, blue lace flowers and roses in a base. There are four divided spaces for the arrangment- left back, left front, right front, right back- and each space has main flowers called Tai, You, Huku, Ushirozoe which are the tallest flowers in each space. In this case, I arranged the tallest calla as Tai (in the left back) and the calla in the left front as You, a rose in the right front as Huku and a blue lace flower in the right back as Ushiro zoe. The other flowers support these main flowers. There is a basic rule for the length of flowers- like You is 3/4 of Tai, and Huku is 3/4 of You.

After three years I'm interested in ikebana more and more. When I first started I mostly cared about the length of flowers. Of course it is important, but these days I pay more attention to lines and shapes of each flower to find out the best place for each of them. I noticed that ikebana depends on how to see the space. Every time you encounter flowers with different characteristics and create the space with them so that it is a depthful world!

Plum trees!

My friend and I went to see plum trees in a park this weekend. There were around 100 kinds of and total 1200 plum trees in the park. Some of the trees are really rare- I heard that there are a few trees called "Kanogyokucho" in Japan and one of them is in the park. It's an interesting tree because a few plates have another plate inside and then another again and again! There were also trees with a mix of pink plates and white plates. I even saw a mix of white and pink parts in a plate! I've been away from my hometown (countryside!) so it's important for me to go to see and feel the season.

Hello Kitty in Kimono

I found a Hello Kitty postcard set in Post Office the other day. Hello Kitty wears Kimono on one of the postcards with cherry blossom around her. When I found it I thought it's nice to send this postcard to my friend who called me when I was sick because she likes kimono, too, so I bought several sets!

Chinese class

I have been studying Chinese for two years and I go to class once or twice in a month. I studied Chinese at school, but unfortunately I forgot most of them, so I'm blushing up my language skills. Here is my self-introduction...

我叫JuJu。我住在日本。
我家里有五口人,妈妈,哥哥,嫂子,侄子还有我。
小时候,我住的地方离山很近,所以我喜欢爬山。
我还喜欢瑜珈。我每月两次去健身房。

One of the ladies in the class gave us something totally new for me! What I heard from this lady was...

This is a healing or beauty product popular in beauty salon in Beijing. You put on fire on the this straw-like product and put the other side of the straw in your ear. You will hear the fire burning and it's supposed to be good for you.

I put the fire on it this evening, but I was kind of scared to try so blew it out. If there is anyone who know about this product, please give me more info!

Valentine's Day

Yesterday was Valentine's Day! In Japan, usually we, women give chocolates to men (boyfriend, husband, family, boss etc.) to tell them that we love them or we thank them. Some chocolate company started this tradition in 1960's. We have the day called "White Day" on March 14 for women to receive sweets from men in return!

My Valentine's chocolate this year was a little box of toruffles from Morozoff. Happy Valentine's Day!
